The Nature of the Alpha Male

January 28th, 2012

The nature of the alpha male is based on confidence and leadership. In the animal kingdom each group has just one alpha male who is their leader and when this leader is challenged he must fight, usually to the death, to maintain his position or lose it to the new alpha male. In humans however there can be several alpha males in a group, in fact they often move in exclusive groups together. A lesser male may fantasize on how to be an alpha male but without the initial self-confidence and leadership skills, they will have a long way to go.

In a canine community; wolves, jackals etc, the alpha male keeps other males in their place purely through eye contact and this is also often the case with human beings. A timid or nervous individual will shrink at the confident gaze of an alpha male and would not dream of approaching him.
